I wasn’t the only Brit here that’s noticed the Melbourne, Australia weather’s similarity to British climes – three out of four seasons seemed to visit the city on Monday, the start of the Five-day long Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress and Exhibition 2016. This event, which moves from one region of the world to another every year, has brought together more than 11,000 visitors from 73 countries to discuss the latest developments in intelligent transport systems.
A key objective of Xerox’s transportation solutions business is to enable more liveable cities. And so Xerox has a strong presence at the event including our own exhibition stand and a shared stand with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems. We’ve also participated in more than 20 of the Congress’ sessions, where we’ve been speaking about everything from parking to Mobility-as-a-Service to intelligent transportation solutions and the digital city.
Melbourne, as few speakers at the event’s opening ceremony failed to remind us, has, for the sixth year in a row, topped The Economist’s list of the world’s most liveable cities. The city’s intelligent transport systems are seen as a key contributor to this status. (Did you know that city’s trams are free to use in the central business district? Imagine that my friends, in central London.)
Xerox and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems
It’s a year since Xerox and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems (MHIMS) announced their Memorandum of Understanding to explore, globally, on a case-by-case basis, potential Intelligent Transport System opportunities. (MHIMS, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), took over MHI’s ITS business in November 2015.)
Our focus has been on electronic toll collection, highway traffic management, telematics and intelligent urban parking. Xerox has proficiency in back-end software and operations, predominantly in the Americas and Europe. MHIMS has strength in front-end hardware and maintenance, predominantly in Japan and Asia.
“Xerox and MHIMS have been jointly engaging government authorities across the world during the last twelve months,” said Pat Elizondo, Senior Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, Government and Transportation Sector, Xerox. “The combined skill, capabilities and joint approach of the two companies brings world leading innovation, major project experience and reduced delivery risk for clients.”
Conduent is coming
On January 29, 2016, Xerox announced its plans to separate into two independent, publicly traded companies – Xerox Corporation, which will be comprised of the company’s Document Technology and Document Outsourcing businesses; and Conduent Incorporated, a business process services company. The company is on track to complete the separation by the end of 2016. Xerox’s transportation business will be part of Conduent Incorporated.
Xerox took the opportunity of the Congress to share Conduent’s new global brand identity with invited guests and visitors at our stand. Pat Elizondo described what the Conduent name represents and what the new brand identity signifies. The company will continue to go to market as Xerox until the separation is final. Delivering Mobility-as-a-Service in 2016
Whilst many only talk about MaaS as something for the future, at Xerox, we’re proud to say we’re actually helping to deliver it in 2016. Scott Silence, Chief Innovation Officer, Public Sector at Xerox, joined Smart Highway’s Paul Hutton in a Congress Today podcast. They discussed how Xerox has partnered with cities like Los Angeles and Denver to make city travel easier for citizens, and the importance of ensuring you’re delivering value to all different stakeholders when introducing mobility services in a city. Xerox Global Transportation Survey
Xerox also released early results from its Global Transportation Survey at ITS World Congress. Cities globally are facing the challenges of increased demand for integrated transportation services and significant population growth. The forthcoming 23 city, global study from Xerox shows that citizens have high expectations for transportation innovation in their cities over the next few years. According to the study, by 2020 half of all respondents (49 per cent) believe they will have one app for all their transportation needs and 27 per cent of respondents believe they will be using a self-driving car. Full results from the study will be released in January 2017 from Conduent Incorporated, Xerox’s Post-Separation Business Processing Services Company.
